UNESCO's World Heritage

Penang is now part of UNESCO's World Heritage Cities Programme. the capital city, George Town, has the most number of pre-war buildings in all of South East Asia which are still intact. That is why, the island is known as Penang Heritage City. George Town (not "Georgetown"; as most people tend to spell it), shows the world that its heritage buildings, art and culture can co-exist alongside modern development.

Outlook

Teluk Bahang Dam (translated as "Heat Bay Dam") is the largest dam on Penang Island, Malaysia. It was built to provide an alternative source of water supply to the Ayer Itam Dam and the Botanic Gardens Waterfall. It is located on the southern part of Teluk Bahang. From its crest, one can enjoy a scenic view of the northern coast of Penang Island. The Teluk Bahang Dam was completed in 1999. The dam has a height of 58.5 meters and a length of 685 meters. The crest is 12 meters thick, allowing for a roadway to be built along it. The Teluk Bahang Dam is often used as the venue for international dragon boat races.

All To Herself

This mansion stands alone in a big plot of land. It was designed by architect James Stark of the firm Stark & McNeill for LIM Mah Chye, a tycoon of the early 20th century. It is said that LIM Mah Chye deliberately built his mansion to block the view enjoyed by his rival, QUAH Beng Kee, who owned a mansion called Columbia Lodge right across the road (and is today the Maple Gold restaurant). The plan of the house is in the form of the letter "E".
In the 1920's, QUAH Beng Kee suffered financial ruins when his ship crashed into the port in Deli, Medan, and he had to pay for the damages. His shipping company was taken over by LIM Chin Guan, the son of LIM Mah Chye. But before long, LIM Chin Guan's fortune also took a nose-dive, hit by the great depression, which destroyed many millionaires but created new ones. LIM Chin Guan had to sell Homestead to one of the newly rich, YEAP Chor Ee, the founder of Ban Hin Lee Bank. Today the Homestead has been turned into the campus of the Wawasan Open University.
The darkness surrounding the mansion is real. It's really this dark.

Creative Green

The photo is over-processed to create a rusty look. It was taken at a motorbike repair shop. I took this photo with the idea of reuse and recycle, hence the title, "Creative Green".

Missing Entity

The Logan Memorial was erected in memory of James Richardson Logan who championed the rights of the non-Europeans in Penang. Logan and his elder brother Abraham came to Penang, and began a law practise. Logan was a lawyer who fought for the rights of locals, and was an advocate for freedom of speech. This statue was erected with funds from the public of Straits Settlement in his honour.

A Green Ride

The Penang Hill is also known as Bukit Bendera. It is 830 meter high (2,750 foot) and it's much about three degrees cooler than the city. The funicular railway will not take you straight to the top, you have to change trains halfway. There are some small hotels and guesthouses on Penang Hill. The railway was built in 1923 and it takes about half an hour to the top. At the top of the hill, you'll find a tea kiosk, restaurants, souvenir stalls, a mosque, Hindu temple, and the old Bellevue hotel. There is also a small bird park/farm. The summit offers a magnificent panoramic view of George Town, the mainland and Penang Bridge.

Straight Lines

I was at the office and feeling extremely bored. I looked up and saw something interesting. Straight lines! This is the ceiling light cover.

Mr Teh Cheng Lai

This is the memorial urn of Mr. Teh Cheng Lai. He was born on 13 January 1911 and passed away on 8 January 1995. He was 84 years old. From the urn, you could tell that his second son, Tien Hai, rested in peace before him. Another mystery remains, the wife was never mentioned. The spectacles (or glasses) tells us that it is one of the most important objects in Mr. Teh's life. He wanted to bring it with him to the other world fearing that he could not see the journey. In the Chinese culture, the dying usually request for certain things to bring with him.

Dome

I went to the supermarket to collect some onion skins. They came in many shapes, sizes and even colours! I like this shape the best because it looks like a dome. People at the supermarket were puzzled by my "purchase". Of course the onion skins were free. The supermarket did not put a price tag on them.

Dilapidated and Forgotten

This is a dilapidated Shih Chung Branch School. It's sad that the government is not doing anything to rescue this structure from further ruins. The field has been turned into a car park for party goers on weekend. Although it's very old, it does not look creepy at all. It stands proud.

Snow White

This photo was taken at the graveyard. I quickly took a few shots before catching up with my sister. It was during Qing Beng (All Souls' Day). People were looking at me but their weird stares didn't deter me.
