My Sardined Neighbourhood
Rifle Range Flats is the name of my neighbourhood. There are nine blocks and they were built in 1969, the first flats in Penang, Malaysia! One block has 16 floors and there are 24 families on one floor! So, there are 384 families in one block; 3456 families altogether in nine blocks! Each flat is about 450 square feet (41.8063 square metre). The corner units are larger. It's named "Rifle Range Flats" because the place used to be the shooting ground for the Japanese. As you can see in the above photo, that is how we park the cars due to space limitation. No one should pull the handbrake. Otherwise, no one could get out. You might find your car window broken into and the handbrake released! If you know that your car is sandwiched, get out early, hand push a few cars - so that you're not late for work or appointment :)
A Beautiful Ruined
This is the old and ruined Shih Chung Branch School in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The Shih Chung School was founded in 1908 by Hakka millionaires Leong Fee @ Liang Pi Joo (1857-1911) and Tye Kee Yoon (1849-1919) at the mansion built by Cheah Tek Soon, Goh Chan Lau. The Loke Mansion
The Loke Mansion is a handsome "arts-and-craft" heritage villa facing the sea on prime real estate in Gurney Drive, Penang, Malaysia. It is one of the heritage sites in Penang threatened by surrounding developments. The Loke Mansion was built by Alan Loke, the son of tycoon Loke Yew, around 1924-25. In keeping with the habit among the well-to-do at that time of building ostentatious homes and giving them English-sounding names, Loke Mansion was originally called "Chatsworth". The northern seafront where it was located, which is today Gurney Drive, was then called North Beach. (Source: http://www.asiaexplorers.com/malaysia/lokemansion.htm)Friday, September 24, 2010
My Name Is Guan Yin
Guan Yin (also spelled Kuan Yin, Kwan Yin or Quan Yin and known as Kuan Shih Yin), is known as the Goddess of Compassion & Healing. She is one of the most popular deities in all of Asia. Her name in Chinese translates as "The One Who Hears the Cries of the World". She is the most beloved and revered of the Chinese dieties. Guan Yin is the Divine Mother we all long for: merciful, tender, compassionate, loving, protecting, caring, healing, and wise. She quietly comes to the aid of her children everywhere. Her mantra is 'Om Mani Padme Hum.' (that is, 'Hail the Jewel -or pearl- in the Lotus.') Many believe that she is the female representation of Avalokitesvara, who is the Tibetan and Nepalese God of Compassion. In Asia, statues of Guan Yin can be found in front of, or on the grounds of, many Buddhist temples. (Source: http://www.circle-of-light.com/Mantras/KuanYin.html)Kek Lok Si Sunset
The Kek Lok Si temple was begun in 1890 and, from all appearances, construction really hasn't ever stopped. And it's still going on! The temple is supposedly the largest in Malaysia. The Kek Lok Si project was inspired by the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple of Pitt Street. With the support of the consular representative of China in Penang, the project received the sanction of the Manchu Emperor Kuang Hsi, who bestowed a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras. "Alamanda" is a shopping centre in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It means "Your Universe". Alamanda shopping centre is currently the only shopping mall that serves the residents of Putrajaya and surrounding towns. It was opened to the public in August 2004 and has over 180 retail outlets. Being the only mall here, it is usually packed during the weekends where many residents around here will bring their family for a time of relaxation and shopping. Located at Precint 1, this mall has about 3,000 car park bays. The parking fee is RM1 (USD 0.31) per entry. If Stars Were Made of Steel
This is how stars would look like if they were made of steel. This is the Seri Wawasan Bridge. It is one of the main bridges in Putrajaya, the Malaysian federal administrative capital. This futuristic cable-stayed bridge which has a sail ship appearance, connects Precinct 2 on the Core Island to the residential area of Precinct 8.25th Century Rocket
This is the Seri Wawasan Bridge in Putrajaya, Malaysia. It has a single span which is 240 metres in length, supported by stayed cables which are suspended from leaning concrete pylons. The Seri Wawasan Bridge carries a six-lane avenue, three each way, as well as pedestrian walkway on each side. Its dramatic appearance is said to be inspired by the Bugis schooner. Sisters
Here is a photo showing two sisters outside the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, Malaysia waiting for free food and also money. I heard that they were once popular singers back in the very early days. Fame turned around and here they are. Also, check out another photo titled Hard Day Thanks for reading. Hard Day
This old lady was sitting in the sun begging for money. The heat was absolutely scorching. It was so bright that I couldn't open my eyes widely. Coupled with smoke, it wasn't a pleasant day at all. However, a day's "work" for this old lady is never completed without some income. This photo was taken outside the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, Malaysia. God Loves Me
His eyes are saying something. What was in his mind when he looked up into the sky? Was he looking for God? Was he seeking faith and strength to carry on?This photo was taken during Thaipusam (2009) in Penang, Malaysia. On the day of Thaipusam, devotees engage in various acts of devotion. One of the acts is to use a skewer and poke through the mouth. The devotees will undertake a pilgrimage along a set route to the temple up in the hill.
A lot of people who don't understand the culture/festival call the acts as inflicting pain upon oneself. The devotees are not doing this at all. If you have faith in God, He loves you
Creative Green
What can you do with two empty fuel tins? You can cut out the side and turn them into containers! This is what I call "Creative Green" - Reuse, Recycle and Reduce! Save Mother Earth! Now, the story of this image. I was walking along the busy Perak Road. I saw a motorbike shop. It looks very dirty, as expected. Black oil was everywhere. Lots of used tyres. Some motorbikes for repair. Then, these two containers caught my eyes. I love the rust, and the dried thick black oil inside the containers. I just love everything about it.
