Was he seeking faith and strength to carry on?This photo was taken during Thaipusam (2009) in Penang, Malaysia. On the day of Thaipusam, devotees engage in various acts of devotion. One of the acts is to use a skewer and poke through the mouth. The devotees will undertake a pilgrimage along a set route to the temple up in the hill.
A lot of people who don't understand the culture/festival call the acts as inflicting pain upon oneself. The devotees are not doing this at all. If you have faith in God, He loves you
